Railroad transit equipment is widely use cast manganese steel wear plate.

Manganese steel plates are designed for extended service and longer life. In service, metal-to-metal contact between coupler and coupler carrier wear plate quickly produces a polished, work-hardened surface that is highly resistant to abrasion.

High manganese steel is  used for railroad components such as crossings and rock-handling equipment because of an enormous capacity for work-hardening upon impact.
